It was the original site of the Dorje Ling Monastery that gave out this town its well-established name. Established on 1st October 1959, the center houses Tibetan immigrants who had followed his Holiness, The Dalai Lama to India in early 1959. The center encompasses a gompa, an old-age home, an orphanage & a live workshop that produces, displays & sells woodworks and handlooms along with the exhibition of classic, black and white display gallery of choice photographs that narrate of Tibetan history.
Five minutes downhill past the CR Das Road will get you to this monastery. It was shifted from the Observatory Hills to its present location by the Chogyal of Sikkim as a part of a restoration project after the earthquake destroyed the monastery in 1934. The gompa houses prized Buddhist relics, the “Book of the Dead” being the most important one. The interiors are housed with handpainted murals that tell of tales related to Buddha’s life. Photography inside the monastery is strictly prohibited, hence it makes it mandatory for tourists to pay this destination a visit in person.

Founded by Nichidatsu Fujii & inaugurated on November 1, 1992, the Peace Pagoda is also known as the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple. The temple is open for joint praying sessions every morning from 4:30 am–6 am and 4:30 pm-6:30 pm in the evening. Designed by Dr. M Okha of Japan, the Peace Pagoda is the tallest standing structure in Darjeeling & is home to beautiful artworks set on sandstone depicting the life and times of Gautama Buddha.
