What does the town offer-

The Observatory Hill:

300m along Bhanu Bhakta Sarani from Chowrasta, a path raided by the infamous monkeys, the Observatory Hill is one of the most famous amongst various Darjeeling’s local sightseeing spots or Darjeeling tourist attractions. It was the original site of the Dorje Ling Monastery that gave out this town its well-established name. This site is home to several shrines sacred to both Hindus & Buddhists who coexist peacefully, offering a stellar demonstration of the existence of religious harmony. The site is strewn with eye-pleasing prayer flags that come by every color.

The Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre:

Established on 1st October 1959, the center houses Tibetan immigrants who had followed his Holiness, The Dalai Lama to India in early 1959. The center encompasses a gompa, an old-age home, an orphanage & a live workshop that produces, displays & sells woodworks and handlooms along with the exhibition of classic, black and white display gallery of choice photographs that narrate of Tibetan history.

Bhutia Busty Gompa:

Five minutes downhill past the CR Das Road will get you to this monastery. It was shifted from the Observatory Hills to its present location by the Chogyal of Sikkim as a part of a restoration project after the earthquake destroyed the monastery in 1934. The gompa houses prized Buddhist relics, the “Book of the Dead” being the most important one. The interiors are housed with handpainted murals that tell of tales related to Buddha’s life. Photography inside the monastery is strictly prohibited, hence it makes it mandatory for tourists to pay this destination a visit in person.

Chowrasta:

The nucleus of Darjeeling, Chowrasta is the place to chill. A debonair no-vehicle zone where four roads converge, this spot is ideal for an evening stroll past the huddling shops that crowd the pavement selling souvenirs. Bag yourself a local horse ride, or secure a seat along the precipice overlooking the majestic hills as you feast on buttered corn & endless cups of local chai. Chowrasta is sure to toast up your heart.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park:

Established in 1958, this zoo is a breeding center & a home to world’s largest single captive population of snow leopards. 20mins from Chowrasta along Jawahar Road West, this site was established to preserve the Himalayan Fauna, that presently include the Siberian Tiger, Himalayan Black Bear, Deer, Red Panda, Snow Leopard & a wide variety of birds. Tourists never miss on this place when they are here for local sightseeing in Darjeeling.

Tiger Hill:

The irresistible spectacle of the sunrise over Tiger Hill is a major aesthetic that adds to Darjeeling’s appeal. Ghumne Chal in Darjeeling organizes regular local sunrise trips for the local sightseeing spot in Tiger Hill at attractive costs around 4 am in the morning which usually follows with a detour back to Batasia Loop & the monasteries in Ghoom. Sacrificing sleep is worth the effort when one gets to watch the sun rays hit the solid 250 km stretch of Himalayas.

The Peace Pagoda:

Founded by Nichidatsu Fujii & inaugurated on November 1, 1992, the Peace Pagoda is also known as the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple. This two storeyed stark white structure is an embodiment of Lord Buddha that disseminates tranquil, and is a popular spot for local sightseeing in Darjeeling. The temple is open for joint praying sessions every morning from 4:30 am–6 am and 4:30 pm-6:30 pm in the evening. Designed by Dr. M Okha of Japan, the Peace Pagoda is the tallest standing structure in Darjeeling & is home to beautiful artworks set on sandstone depicting the life and times of Gautama Buddha.
